Constitutional Amendment: “We’ll Sleep Here, We Have Stoves, Pots” – Women Shutdown National Assembly Over Rejection Of Gender Bills (Photos)

There is protest currently going on at the National Assembly.

This comes after some women from different groups and backgrounds stormed the National Assembly on Wednesday and shut down the main entrance.

The women demanded that all women’s constitutional amendments rejected by the National Assembly be reviewed.

It would be recalled that the two chambers of the National Assembly rejected about five bills relating to women during the constitution review exercise.

The rejection of the bills was done despite the appeal by the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, who was in both chambers during the presentation of the reports on Constitution amendments.

The Second Lady, Dolapo Osinbajo, was also in the chamber during the consideration on Tuesday, but the lawmakers went ahead to throw out the bills.

Dr Abiola Akiyode, who spoke on behalf of the groups, said both the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; and Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila must address them.

She noted that the lawmakers have only one option; rescinding the bill or face women’s wrath.

Senate Minority Leader, Enyinaya Abaribe, who addressed the women behind the gate, said the women should demand the voting record to see how all the lawmakers voted on all the bills.

“The records of the voting are public records, hence, it is your right to demand them,” he said.

He assured them that he will present their positions to the leadership of the Senate.

Currently, the women are seated at the entrance, preventing vehicles from going in or out.
