Ahmad Ahmad, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has been handed a five-year ban by the world football governing body, FIFA.
The ban which was announced on Monday was handed down against Ahmad over allegations of corruption and abuse of office as CAF president.
Ahmad was elected CAF president in March 2017 and was standing for re-election.
According to the FIFA statement, Ahmad was banned for “governance issues,” was also accused of breaching “his duty of loyalty, offered gifts and other benefits, mismanaged funds and abused his position as the CAF President”.
Ahmad who is from Madagascar has also been fined 200,000 Swiss francs ($220,000) by FIFA for his actions which is related to “the organisation and financing of an Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca” and his involvement in CAF’s dealings with a sports equipment company.
