Kwara High Court Sentence Ex-Deputy Rector’s Son, Others For Cybercrime

A Kwara State High Court in Ilorin has sentenced Olaoye Jamiu Olarewaju, the son of a former Deputy Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, over offences bordering on cybercrime

Olaoye was sentenced to six months imprisonment with N150,000 as an option of fine.

Justice Adenike Akinpelu of the Kwara State High Court also sentenced two others alongside Olaoye over similar offences.

One Badmus Ridwan Moyosore, a native of Ibadan, Oyo State and one Abdulsalam Ibrahim from Malete in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State, were also convicted for cybercrime.

The trio were prosecuted separately by Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday.

A witness testified against Olaoye, that he fraudulently defrauded one of his victims to the tune of $2,000, while the testimony against Badmus revealed that the defendant swindled his victim of the sum of $200.

The testimony against Abdulsalam was to the effect that he was involved in a “sugar baby relationship scam” and that over N18 million suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities passed through his account.

The convicts pleaded guilty to their respective charges.

Badmus was also sentenced to six months imprisonment with N100,000 as an option of fine.

While Abdulsalam was sentenced to six months imprisonment with N150,000 as an option of fine.

The court, meanwhile, also ordered that an iPhone that he used to perpetrate the crime and the draft of N400,000.00 which Olaoye raised as restitution be forfeited to the Federal Government.

The forfeiture of two phones and a laptop used by the Badmus and a Toyota Camry Car, two phones and a laptop used by Abdulsalam as instruments of the crime were ordered to be forfeited to the Federal Government.
