Residents of Agwabi community in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State were left in disbelief after a mortuary attendant, identified as Amaobi, was apprehended for allegedly using the leg of a deceased person as a walking stick.
According to reports, the disturbing incident occurred on Friday morning when Amaobi, who is in charge of a local mortuary, reportedly took the severed limb to a nearby shop while attempting to purchase items. His actions quickly attracted attention, sparking outrage among community members.
Eyewitnesses say the situation escalated as youths in the area confronted and detained him before handing him over to operatives of the Benue State Police Command.
In his confession, Amaobi claimed that the act was not driven by malice but was a desperate attempt to draw public and government attention to the condition of the mortuary. He alleged that over 18 bodies, believed to be victims of criminal incidents handled by security operatives last year, remain unclaimed and unattended in the facility.
The incident has since generated widespread reactions, with many calling for a thorough investigation and improved oversight of mortuary practices in the state.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement as of the time of filing this report.
