Oyo Abduction: Muslims Reject Terrorists’ Sharia Law Demand
Share

The Muslim community in Oyo State has reportedly rejected terrorists’ demand for the implementation of Sharia law as part of the conditions for the release of abducted teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area.

The group condemned the kidnappers’ actions, insisting that terrorism, kidnapping, and extortion have no place in Islam.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Alhaji Ishaq Sanvni, and Secretary-General, Alhaji Murisiku Siyanbade, the Muslim community described the abductors’ demands as criminal and contrary to Islamic teachings.

According to the group, attempts by the kidnappers to justify their actions using religion amount to a misrepresentation of Islam.

“Islam forbids kidnapping, terrorism and the extortion of innocent citizens. Legitimate Sharia promotes justice, peace and the sanctity of human life, values that stand in direct opposition to the activities of criminal groups,” the statement read.

The organisation stressed that the criminals could not claim to be acting on behalf of Muslims or Islam.

“Terrorists do not represent Islamic values and cannot speak for Muslims,” the statement added.

The group further cited Chapter 5 Verse 32 of the Holy Qur’an, noting that Islam places great importance on the protection of human life.

The development comes as public and private schools across Oyo State’s 33 local government areas reportedly shut down in solidarity with the abducted teachers and pupils.

The abductors reportedly attacked three schools in Esiele, Yawota, and Alawusa communities on May 15, abducting teachers and pupils.

Reports indicate that the kidnappers demanded the release of detained terrorist commanders, payment of ransom, two Hilux vehicles, and the implementation of Sharia-related law before releasing the captives.

The demands have sparked widespread concern and condemnation from various groups and stakeholders.”
