A woman has been rescued from what neighbours described as a horrifying ordeal in the Mpape area of Maitama Extension, Abuja, after allegedly spending four years chained and locked inside a dark room by her own brother over a business disagreement.
According to eyewitness accounts, the woman’s brother had taken sole control of a cement business the two had established together, and upon her attempt to claim her share, allegedly declared her mentally unfit and forcibly confined her to prevent her from pursuing the matter further.
The discovery was made by chance when a man fetching water near the compound heard unusual sounds emanating from a locked room. He promptly alerted residents in the area, who gathered and forced entry into the room, where they found the woman bound in chains inside the darkened space.
She was immediately rescued and taken to a hospital for urgent medical attention. Years of alleged confinement had left her physically incapacitated, as she could no longer walk unaided.
Beyond her own suffering, an eyewitness further alleged that the woman’s daughter had gone missing and insinuated that the brother may have been responsible for the child’s disappearance, with claims that the minor could have been used for ritual purposes. Authorities have not yet verified these additional allegations, and investigations into the full circumstances of the case are expected to follow.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage within the community and renewed concerns over domestic abuse and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals under the guise of mental illness.
