No Country Develops Under Democracy — Bukina Faso President, Traoré
Share

Burkina Faso’s transitional President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has sparked widespread discussion after declaring that Sharia law will never be introduced in the West African nation despite identifying himself as a Muslim.

The remarks, reportedly made during an address in Burkina Faso, have gone viral on social media, where supporters and critics alike have debated his position on religious freedom and national unity. Reports indicate that Traoré stressed that Burkina Faso would remain a country where citizens are free to practise their chosen religion.

The President’s comments come as Burkina Faso continues to battle violent extremist groups, with his administration repeatedly emphasising national cohesion over religious divisions.

President Traoré said, “I am a Muslim, but everyone in Burkina Faso has the right to practice their own religion. There will never be Sharia law in this country.”

He also addressed Burkinabè citizens studying Sharia law in Saudi Arabia.

The President added, “To those Burkinabè studying Sharia law in Saudi Arabia, do not return to Burkina Faso. Instead of acquiring technological knowledge and skills that can help develop our country, you chose to study Sharia law. Stay where you are, you won’t be allowed back here.”

Traoré’s comments have generated mixed reactions online, with many praising his emphasis on religious tolerance and technological development, while others questioned the reported warning directed at students studying Sharia abroad.

The remarks have further fuelled discussions about the balance between religious freedom, national security and education in Burkina Faso, where the government has intensified efforts against religious extremism in recent years.
